The GTA VI gameplay leak: what the two clips show
Published: · in English
Two short clips of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay surfaced on 18 August. Take-Two began issuing DMCA notices the same day and blocked the distributor’s domains.
On status, up front. Rockstar has confirmed none of what follows. The material is not evidence in itself, and the build appears to be old — insiders and metadata analysis both point to 2023–2024. Anything could have changed since, and some of what is shown may not survive to release. We are reporting an event, not presenting its contents as facts about the game. The clips themselves, and stills from them, are not here and will not be.
What actually happened
The material is being spread by a group calling itself Cyberleek. Its motives are worth keeping in mind: alongside the leak it promotes a cryptocurrency of its own, which is reason enough not to take its claims at face value.
The indirect argument for authenticity is the rights holder’s reaction. Take-Two did not deny anything; it went and filed DMCA notices. Publishers do not usually do that over a fabrication, because a complaint about material that does not exist achieves nothing. That is an argument about where the files came from, not about how the game works today.
On the map circulating alongside the clips: the community met it with scepticism — the people behind the fan reconstruction of Leonida considered it fake or placeholder art. We are not analysing it.
What is visible on screen
Below is what outlets that went through the clips frame by frame describe. This is a summary of their observations, not our conclusions about the game.
- Fuel and wearSeparate gauges for petrol and engine condition on a car.
- Six-star wanted levelSix segments instead of the five GTA 5 had.
- DescriptionsThree icons under the stars: clothing, face, vehicle.
- Search areaThe minimap highlights a district rather than the player.
- StaminaA meter that drains during a fist fight.
- Morality counterA minus icon for hitting someone already down.
- Boot storageEquipment slots when approaching a car.
- Two money countersSeparate sums for the character and for his home.
- Stat growthA bonus to an attribute for succeeding at a minigame.
- Bystander behaviourNPCs start fights and speak outside scripted scenes.
How to treat this
Matching expectations is not confirmation. Much of the list looks plausible simply because comparable mechanics exist in other Rockstar games, and that makes the material convincing to look at rather than reliable.
There will be something to check it against: on 27 August Rockstar shows extended gameplay itself for the first time. What is known about the showcase and when it airs is in the extended look on 27 August. Until then the only honest status for everything above is “unconfirmed”.
