GTA VI character theories: which ones deserve attention
Last updated: 2026-08-13
Why this page exists
A thousand times more has been written about GTA VI’s eight characters than Rockstar has said. Some of it is close reading of the official texts, some is invention, and some is a retelling of a four-year-old stolen build. Usually all three sit in the same paragraph, unlabelled.
This page sorts out what each major theory rests on. Not to call them stupid — several are perfectly sensible. So that the difference between “follows from the official description” and “somebody decided this” stays visible.
“Bonnie and Clyde”
The claim: Jason and Lucia are a modern Bonnie and Clyde, so the story ends badly for both.
What it rests on: visual references, and they are real. In the first trailer the pair rob a liquor store; the key art shows bullet holes on their car — a direct quotation of the famous photograph of the real Bonnie and Clyde’s vehicle.
What almost nobody mentions: Rockstar has never used the phrase. The press and the community introduced it, and it has since become so familiar that people take it for official. The difference matters: the studio offered an image, not a plot promise.
A by-product. On the same theory, Reddit worked out that trailer 3 would arrive on May 23, 2026 — the anniversary of the real pair’s deaths. The date passed with no trailer, and the showcase is set for August 27. A good example of elegant symbolism having nothing to do with a publisher’s plans.
“One of the leads is undercover”
The claim: Jason (less often Lucia) is a police officer or federal agent.
What it rests on: the prison scene opening the first trailer, and the 2022 leak.
Our read: legitimate as a theory, not as a fact. The official descriptions of both leads leave no room for it: Jason’s stated job is working for drug runners, Lucia’s stated history is prison for fighting for her family. Not a hint of a double game.
Casting by resemblance
The claim: Manni L. Perez is Lucia, Dylan Rourke is Jason, Bobby Moynihan is Cal, Stephen Root is Brian, Oscar Jaenada is Raul.
What it rests on: facial likeness and old credits. One argument is verifiable and therefore stands out: Perez did voice a blackjack dealer in GTA Online’s Diamond Casino update — but that is a fact about GTA Online, not about GTA VI.
The thing to know: Rockstar has announced no actors at all, and that is not an oversight. The studio keeps voice casts closed until release — the same was true of GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. So until November 19, any cast list is a set of guesses, however confident the tone.
Liberty City
The claim: the game will take us to Liberty City, or at least tie the story to it.
What it rests on: a single line in Lucia’s official description — her mother has dreamed of the good life since their days in Liberty City.
Our read: the line is family backstory, not a location. Officially the game has one state: Leonida, with six regions.
Why we do not use the 2022 leak
In September 2022 dozens of files of working material leaked out of Rockstar. A large share of character theories leans on them. We do not, for three reasons:
- The material is stolen. For us that is enough on its own.
- It is four years old. Even the fan sources that retell it warn that anything could have changed since; a four-year-old build describes plans, not results.
- The “leak” market is polluted with fakes. Generative models made forgery cheap and convincing, and from the outside it cannot be told from the real thing.
The conclusion is simple: a theory whose entire strength comes from the leak stays a theory here, with no promotion.
What to do with a theory
If you have one, it belongs on the forum, where a finding gets a status and a vote — not in a reference article. Anything two people confirm moves into the catalogue and appears in eighteen languages; everything else stays honestly marked as a hypothesis.
